Author : SRA Media

Of the back of the opening round at Moama, the Sprintcar Racing Association of Victoria’s 12 round Open Sprintcar Series continues this Saturday night at the famed high banks of Premier Speedway, Warrnambool. With the sports two biggest events set to be staged by the Premier Speedway club in January, a brilliant field will converge on Warrnambool this Saturday night while in a major bonus for fans the Pro Sprintcars will contest the opening round of their series on the same program.

A strong 43 Sprintcars have nominated for the Open Sprintcar Series while 25 entries have been received in the Pro Sprintcars for their season kick off this Saturday night also.

While the series is only one round in former series champion Rusty Hickman has bolted to an early point lead ahead of experienced South Australian Chad Ely with rising prospect Bobby Daly in third. The impressive Daniel Sayre sits fourth following his solid Moama form and another past series champion Daniel Pestka in fifth.

While the SRA Open Sprintcar Series is only beginning to take shape, the inclusion of a number of high profile entries will spice up the series standings following the next few rounds. The series points on offer this Saturday night will be hotly contested however several of the countries finest Sprintcar racers are intent on the race win and the $5,000 first prize that’s on offer.

Simply the hottest driver in the country currently is Queenslander and Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic winner Lockie McHugh as his record of four wins from five starts already this season has McHugh as one of the pre race favourites. An added bonus is McHugh will also suit up in the Pro Sprintcar on the same evening as he once again teams up with the very potent C&H Trucking team led by owner Domain Ramsay.

While McHugh’s form is irresistible, he will face strong competition in the form of reigning Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic champion and defending track champion Brock Hallett, experience track specialist and local hero Jamie Veal while arguably the biggest challenge could come in the form of Australian Sprintcar champion Jock Goodyer.

Yet more drawcards entered include recent Supercar race winner Cameron Waters, ex Australian champ Marcus Dumesny, Classic prelim winner Tate Frost, talented Queensland teen Jy Corbet, speedy Sydney ace Jordyn Brazier plus Murray Bridge gun Ryan Jones and the ever popular Grant Anderson in the familiar family run V37.

While excitement surrounds McHugh’s double duty this Saturday night as he will contest the Pro Sprintcar events in addition to the SRA series, Jamie Veal will do likewise as he suits up for the Victory Lane Racegear V88 team.

A strong field will have to good to better the pair of stars just mentioned however state champ and aggregate winner Jordy Rae is the leading light following a break out season last summer that saw him capture many of the Pro Sprintcar awards at the SRA presentation dinner.

The always fast Matthew Symons, Sam Wren, Dennis Jones and Paul Solomon will be major contenders in the opening round of the Pro Sprintcar Series. Justin Barton, Nigel Laity, Harry Ross and Steven Horton are more regular front runners in what will be a great hit out for the Pro Sprintcars at Warrnambool.

Pro Sprintcar numbers are expected to continue to climb through the season as the Australian Pro Sprintcar championship will be contested in April, 2024 at Avalon Raceway.

With all of the ingredients this Saturday night promises to be a spectacular night at Premier Speedway, Warrnambool with a first class line up set to produce a great night of racing.

Public gates open at 4pm this Saturday night at Premier Speedway, Warrnambool with on track action at 5pm.

Pit gates open for competitors at 1pm.
